Kentwood Public Schools Early Childhood Center

Kentwood, MI // 42,350 sq. ft.

Kentwood Public Schools has expanded its offerings for the district’s youngest learners with the construction of a 42,500-square-foot Early Childhood Center located adjacent to Townline Elementary. The design of this new facility was guided by six core principles:

  • A commitment to educational excellence.
  • Creating a healthy, safe, and secure environment.
  • Prioritizing equity and inclusion for all.
  • Emphasizing durability and longevity.
  • Promoting sustainability and minimizing ecological impact.
  • Seamlessly integrating technology.

Visitors and students are welcomed into a warm, inviting lobby that connects to the building’s primary shared spaces, including administrative offices, evaluation and therapy rooms, and a community area. At the heart of the building is a spacious multi-purpose room designed to inspire movement, play, and sensory exploration, fostering creativity and engagement.

From this central hub, two classroom wings extend in a “V” configuration. Each wing houses eight classrooms arranged around an 18-foot-wide commons corridor. This space features high ceilings, abundant natural light, and areas for collaborative play. Every one of the 16 classrooms offers direct access to outdoor play areas and the playground, encouraging seamless indoor-outdoor learning experiences.

The Early Childhood Center was thoughtfully designed to provide a safe, accessible, and adaptable environment, laying a solid foundation for Kentwood’s youngest learners. By nurturing curiosity and fostering a love for learning, the facility supports the holistic development of every child.
