Northwood University

Troy Campus Relocation

Troy, Michigan // 8,633 sq. ft.

Northwood University has 12 campuses throughout Michigan, as well as several other locations throughout the country. To support their mission of developing future leaders of a global, free-enterprise society, the University found it necessary to provide a larger, more suitable facility with a greater street presence at their Troy satellite campus.

Northwood identified a two-story building a few blocks away from their existing facility on a major thoroughfare that would offer more academic space and improved visibility from the street. TowerPinkster worked with their team to verify space program requirements and create a design to transform the facility from an old call center into an inspiring educational environment.

The renovated space occupies almost the entire first floor of the building and is located directly adjacent to the main lobby. The University’s entrance is pronounced with a glass entry wall that draws users into the space. Transparent wall partitions were also used, allowing light to penetrate through the entire area where low ceilings had once made the space feel small and dark.

The design is crisp, clean, and professional to support primarily working adults during evenings and weekends. Program offerings at the location include undergraduate and graduate-level business administration courses, and the new classrooms, offices, conference rooms, kitchen, and open work areas support the University’s interactive learning environment. The design standards and character established in this project set the bar for other Northwood University renovation projects.
