Experience Justice Judge Charles A. Pratt Justice Facility Kalamazoo County Judge Charles A. Pratt Justice FacilityKalamazoo, Michigan // 165,000 sq. ft. Kalamazoo County’s Master Plan called for a new courthouse to replace the existing facility. TowerPinkster, in collaboration with HOK, designed the Judge Charles A. Pratt Justice Center. This modern building consolidates judicial functions by integrating the county prosecutor’s office with circuit and district courtrooms under one roof. Designed with public accessibility and efficiency in mind, the Justice Center places key services like jury assembly rooms and the court clerk’s office on the ground floor for easy access. The upper floors house specialized court functions, with the circuit court on the top floor, followed by the prosecutor’s office and district courtrooms. The building features several architectural elements that enhance functionality and sustainability. A central light well brightens the interior, reducing the need for artificial lighting, while the roof is designed to regulate solar heat, reflecting the county’s environmental commitment. The design team worked closely with the county to ensure the facility meets both current and future community needs, emphasizing transparency and accessibility. The south-facing facade features a high-performance glass curtain wall that allows natural light to permeate public spaces, symbolizing openness in the judicial process. Sustainable materials, LED lighting, and a welcoming landscape further demonstrate the county’s commitment to creating a modern, accessible, and environmentally responsible courthouse.
