Client Challenge

Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) had a vision to add new facilities to support its Culinary Arts and Allied Health Programs. One of three buildings within the new Bronson Healthy Living Campus development in downtown Kalamazoo, the Culinary and Allied Health Building responds to the rising trend of simulation within the academic environment and promote wellness while increasing community access to healthy food and nutrition.

The Culinary and Allied Health Building delivers education about the interconnection of the college’s Food and Health Studies programs. The Culinary Arts program focuses on the healthy outcomes and impact food can have on a community. The food service areas feature a community kitchen for outreach classes, as well as a tiered classroom for large-scale demonstration cooking seminars. The Allied Health programs make use of cutting-edge Skills Labs and Simulation Rooms which create real-world, hands-on situations for students such as simulation programs for EMT, respiratory care, and nursing students in a real-world environment with modern equipment and high tech sim areas. These are set up into a series of flexible group-based education rooms and associated observation and debriefing spaces to allow students to both watch and participate in treatment situations.
