The $35 million Charles Hackley Middle School, located at the former Mercy Hackley Hospital site, represents a significant milestone as the district’s first new school in 65 years. This 133,000-square-foot, three-story building serves more than 900 students in grades 6-8. Mercy Health donated the 15-acre site to the district in 2021 after moving its hospital, and the project was funded by a $104 million bond approved by voters in 2020. Construction began in 2022 following the hospital’s demolition in late 2021. Designed with students in mind, the school features 45 academic classrooms, six science labs, a media center, a music wing, and a spacious 11,000-square-foot gymnasium with an elevated running track and seating for 700. The building also includes a STEAM lab equipped with over $250,000 in technology, as well as a weight room, cardio room, and a dedicated “Chill Zone” for quiet learning. A regulation-size track and turf field provides space for football, soccer, and lacrosse. The design incorporates advanced safety features, including blue-light lockdown alarms, secure entryways, and well-thought-out building geometry. The bright and open layout, filled with natural light, aims to create a healthy, welcoming environment that enhances student focus and well-being. Paying homage to the district’s history, the use of brick and the school’s name honor Muskegon’s prominent Hackley family.
