Portage Public Schools

Central Elementary replaces an aging 1960s facility under Portage Public Schools’ bond plan. Tailored to a middle-class, family-oriented demographic that highly values equitable educational opportunities, the design transforms traditional classrooms into collaborative, interconnected learning communities.

The new school sits on an active, multi-school campus, as other facilities are under construction. The second-story exterior employs subtle blue tones to draw attention skyward, while the warm, textured masonry base seamlessly fades into the surrounding meadow.

The core learning spaces are organized by developmental stages (Young 5s to 5th grade) into “neighborhood parks”. These connect classrooms directly to shared learning commons, breakout areas, and cozy insets. This layout enhances modern instruction by accommodating diverse modalities, from independent study to team-based learning. Points of interest include an active-furniture ecosystem (wobbly stools, floor cushions) that students and teachers have piloted and selected to maximize daily spatial flexibility.

The interior prioritizes size, shape, and color across three key zones: the Heart, circulation paths, and Learning Communities.

• The Heart (“Central Park”): Features a grand, communicating stair adjacent to the Art Room and Library, allowing creativity to overflow into social areas.

• Sensory Design: Soft, organic forms act as intuitive wayfinding, while color intensity is dialed up for collaboration or dialed down for focused, sensory-calming study.

This project successfully aligns curriculum, culture, and space. It delivers an incredible ROI by establishing a future-proof, easily reconfigurable footprint that elevates the human spirit and adapts to evolving educational needs.
