Portage Public Schools

Haverhill Elementary replaces an aging 1960s facility under Portage Public Schools’ bond plan. Serving a family-centric, community-oriented demographic, the design transitions traditional, isolated classrooms into collaborative, interconnected grade-level learning studios.

The project overcame a complex, multi-layered logistical challenge: the existing school had to remain fully operational as a “swing school” to house students during regional multi-phase construction. Embracing its stunning, mature wooded backdrop, the building beautifully integrates with its site through a steel-frame structural system and a high-performance brick masonry and glass envelope. Notable design innovations include biophilic features such as organic forms, a distinctive glass corner wall to maximize daylight harvesting, and mango-colored accent bricks that bridge the built environment and nature.

Core learning spaces are designed as “greenhouse” learning ecosystems focused on student growth and wellness. Studios group students by developmental stages (Young 5s to 5th grade), extending instruction beyond classroom walls into shared learning commons and breakout areas. Points of interest include an agile furniture ecosystem (wobbly stools, floor cushions) vetted through a rigorous student pilot program, allowing daily physical adaptability and user choice.

The interior prioritizes size, shape, and color across tactile spaces.

• The Gathering Stair: Located in the school’s central Heart, this open, light-filled architectural feature uses warm wood and earthy accents to mimic light and shadow dancing across a forest floor.

• The “Treehouse”: Perched at the top of the stairs, this small-scale, hidden sanctuary serves as a protective canvas for intimate collaboration.

• Sensory Design: Highly tactile finishes and natural wayfinding cues encourage exploration. Palettes are dialed down in active studios to create a calming backdrop for learning.

This project celebrates local cultural identity, with Portage being a “Tree City USA.” By grounding facilities in curriculum and nature, this approach creates an adaptable, sustainable footprint that reduces occupant stress, boosts cognitive focus, and delivers an exceptional, future-proof ROI.
