Kalamazoo Event Center: A Building Rooted in Place, Layered in Time

The Kalamazoo Event Center represents a significant civic investment that captures Kalamazoo’s identity, history, and future. Located at the edge of downtown, the building serves as both an anchor and an ambassador, connecting the urban core with the surrounding neighborhoods, linking legacy and innovation, and bringing community and performance together.

At its core, the design is a simple yet powerful concept: Kalamazoo’s story is layered, and this building tells that story.

Grounded in Kalamazoo

The design process began with a question: What does it mean to belong to Kalamazoo?

Early discussions focused on establishing a strong, grounded foundation, both literally and symbolically, rooted in the region. The building’s base consists of masonry, symbolizing the enduring strength of Kalamazoo’s industrial and architectural heritage. The rest of the building and Kalamazoo’s evolving narrative are constructed on this foundation.

Materials as Storytellers

Material selection is crucial to the design process, as it impacts both performance and meaning. The design team chose each material for its ability to connect with Kalamazoo’s identity, and they celebrate Michigan’s unique four seasons in color, tone, and texture.

  • Stone + Masonry: Represents grounding, permanence, and regional identity.
  • Weathered Metal: Symbolizes industry, resilience, and the passage of time
  • Wood: Offers warmth, tactility, and a sense of human scale.
  • Glass + Translucent Elements: Light, openness, and a sense of connection between indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Biophilic Features: Water, plantings, and natural textures reinforce a connection to the landscape.

The building features a juxtaposition of layered materials that establishes both contrast and cohesion in various spaces.

Connecting Kalamazoo: The Event Center’s Three Entrances

The Event Center is designed as a connector, not a barrier, with three main entrances establishing a distinct relationship with the surrounding community:

  • Downtown Entrance: Creates strong visual links to the city’s urban energy and downtown fabric, engaging visitors with the bustling heart of Kalamazoo.
  • Arcadia Entrance: Faces the landscape, ecology, and the broader region, opening the building to the surrounding environment.
  • Northside Entrance: Honors Kalamazoo’s rich legacy of innovation and industry.

These thoughtfully positioned entrances link people, places, and experiences across the community.

Ice Sheet: Winter + Motion

The practice ice area features an icy, industrial design. Faceted metal and fractured glass create a sense of rhythm and motion, mirroring the speed and precision of skating. Light refracts off these surfaces, capturing the crisp energy of winter.

Event Hall: Spring + Growth

The building’s masonry foundation is a prominent interior feature, remaining visible through the glass within the event hall. The design team painstakingly laid out the brick to depict the topography of Kalamazoo in dimension and relief. Above, pearlescent terracotta adds lightness and texture, symbolizing growth, connection, and the vibrancy of commerce and community gatherings. The celebration of the region as an agricultural leader and the rebirth and renewal of a new year are captured in these vertical, aspirational forms.

Arena: Summer + Atmosphere

The arena features a complex and expressive design. The masonry is integrated into a narrative façade, while increased transparency reveals the interior life and activities taking place within. A delicate layer of rods and sunshades softens the eastern edge, creating a luminous, atmospheric quality that changes with the light.

Basketball: Autumn + Energy

Warm wood tones wrap the basketball venue, introducing a sense of breathability and movement. The form twists and extends outward, connecting visually and spatially to downtown. A netted façade element gestures toward the sport itself while symbolizing openness and energy.

Experience at the Forefront

The design goes beyond just form and material; it is focused on providing an exceptional experience. Every decision is made with the needs of guests, athletes, and tenants in mind, drawing inspiration from the best-performing venues worldwide while retaining a unique Kalamazoo identity.

Key elements such as transparency, movement, and visual connections work together to create an immersive environment. Whether visitors are arriving for a game, concert, or community event, they are welcomed into a series of spaces that feel engaging and memorable.
