ERCES – What it is and why it’s important.

An Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement System (ERCES) is a system designed to ensure that police, fire, and EMS radios operate reliably inside buildings. This is especially critical in environments such as schools, hospitals, high-rises, and large facilities, where construction materials like concrete, steel, or energy-efficient glass can weaken or block radio signals.

How It Works

An ERCES uses a network of antennas, amplifiers, and cabling to strengthen radio signals within the building. A key component is the donor antenna, which is mounted on the roof. This antenna captures the external public safety radio signal and distributes it throughout the interior while also retransmitting signals from within the building back to the exterior.

Code Requirements

Many jurisdictions require ERCES testing and installation based on standards set by NFPA 72, NFPA 1221, or the International Fire Code, Section 510, if a building doesn’t meet minimum radio signal strength and quality levels. An ERCES is required in both new and existing buildings only if the radio signal strength and/or quality is found to be inadequate. This determination is made through testing, which TowerPinkster can perform. If testing confirms adequate signal strength and quality, no system is needed. However, if testing indicates that part or all of the building lacks sufficient coverage, an ERCES must be installed.

Maintenance + Testing

The system must be tested annually to ensure it continues to meet code requirements and provides reliable coverage. We can conduct testing at the property prior to construction commencing. While this won’t confirm whether ERCES will ultimately be required, it does provide valuable baseline data about radio signal strength. This information helps you plan with confidence and make informed decisions about potential future needs. The initial test should be conducted as early as possible in the design process. If the site or building fails the test or is borderline, then an ERCES should be budgeted and designed. When the project reaches approximately 80% completion, the design must be reevaluated and adjusted to account for the actual building’s impact on the radio signals.
