Media + Press //Articles WMU Willis F. Dunbar Hall Achieves LEED Gold Western Michigan University’s (WMU) Willis F. Dunbar Hall has officially achieved LEED Gold certification, marking a key milestone in the university’s commitment to sustainable campus growth. The recognition follows a comprehensive renovation led by TowerPinkster in partnership with HGA, which modernized the 78,000-square-foot academic building while maintaining its historic structure. From 1971 Landmark to Modern Learning Center Built in 1971 as a state-of-the-art facility and one of WMU’s first clustered academic buildings, Dunbar Hall had not experienced a major renovation in more than 50 years. As the second most-used facility on campus, Dunbar houses WMU’s College of Arts and Sciences along with numerous other academic programs. The renovation stripped the building down to its skeleton before reconstructing it into a modern learning space, aligning with WMU’s broader vision to create engaging, sustainable academic environments that foster innovation and collaboration. Sustainability at the Heart The LEED Gold designation showcases Dunbar Hall’s advanced sustainability features, which lower both operational energy and embodied carbon. Major achievements include: 43% reduction in energy use from code thanks to new high-efficiency MEP systems, including a chilled beam system and a 100% fresh air energy recovery system. Green roofs that reduce heat gain and improve stormwater management. Bird-safe glass to minimize bird strikes while maximizing natural light. Enhanced building envelope commissioning and improved insulation (R-value) for greater thermal efficiency. Native landscaping is designed to reduce water use and support biodiversity. Indoor and outdoor bike parking to promote alternative transportation. Reuse of the existing structure and envelope significantly reduces embodied carbon and construction waste. These strategies make Dunbar Hall one of WMU’s most energy-efficient academic buildings to date. Bird safe glass Reuse of existing building Green roofs + native landscaping Spaces Designed for Creativity and Collaboration Beyond sustainability, the renovation reimagined Dunbar Hall as a hub for interdisciplinary learning and student engagement. The Media Suite now serves as a central space for broadcasting, podcasting, and journalism programs with state-of-the-art equipment for student creativity. The project also added an 11,000-square-foot glass extension, enhancing visibility from Stadium Drive and housing a top-floor, high-tech dance studio. A new signature entrance provides better access for students and visitors, reinforcing Dunbar’s role as both a community and academic landmark. A Model for Future Campus Design By earning LEED Gold certification, Dunbar Hall shows WMU’s ability to balance sustainability, functionality, and student-focused design. The project reflects the university’s long-term commitment to reducing environmental impact while investing in high-performance, innovative learning spaces. Dunbar Hall’s transformation is more than a renovation; it’s a benchmark for sustainable campus design and a symbol of WMU’s vision for the future of higher education. Learn more about Dunbar Hall.
