The K College Natatorium and Warner Building Are Honored at AIA Design Awards

We are thrilled to share that two projects have received 2022 design awards from the American Institute of Architects Southwest Michigan chapter. Projects were juried by a selection of peers from the AIA’s Central Idaho chapter. Congratulations to our clients, the design team members, and everyone who took home an award this year. It was great to be back together celebrating great design in our communities.

Kalamazoo College Natatorium, Honor Award Winner

  • Location: Kalamazoo, MI
  • Size: 35,000 square feet

From the jury: “We appreciated the strong composition of forms and interplay of solid and void. The design successfully expresses the dynamic performance of swimmers; the wave form is evocative of movement and elegantly resolved. The building fits nicely into the overall campus fabric, with an inviting entry and nicely proportioned lobby. This project also stood out in its attention to materials and detailing, use of daylighting, and the expression of the structural and building systems.”

Kalamazoo College’s natatorium features an NCAA competition-compliant pool with wet offices and classrooms, spectator viewing areas, and locker rooms. The 35,000-square-foot, two-story facility features eight competition lanes, a separate diving area with 1-meter and 3-meter boards, on-deck seating for athletes, a dryland training room, an office suite for coaches and meet management, a high-quality timing system and large scoreboard, varsity team locker rooms for swimmers and divers, a display space of awards in the lobby and LEED sustainable features and design elements. The Warner Building at 180 Water Street, Honor Award Winner

  • Location: Kalamazoo, MI
  • Size: 275,000 square feet

From the jury: “It is readily apparent that there was a great emphasis placed on creating dynamic energy through the well thought out integration of program uses, spaces, people, materials, geometry all of which lead to a deep intrigue when viewing and interacting with the building from afar as well as seeing it from within.

Each aspect of The Warner Building was planned with comfort and longevity at its core. In addition to its ideal location, the building offers plenty of parking, state-of-the-art surveillance, and soundproofing throughout the building, along with an abundance of amenities including community space, a fitness center, and a rooftop terrace.
